Art & Queer Culture
This month we celebrate Pride, LGBTIQA+ artistry, creativity and expression and also take time to reflect on its history, from the Stonewall Riots and the police raids and brutality that inspired Pride.
The most cursory glance across the history of art, design, photography, film, music and performance shows the transformative impact and gifts to culture that queer artists have created, often in the face of discrimination, poverty and violence. We continue to celebrate and support this abundance of creativity, while also working to ensure queer safety and equity.
'Queer' has been re-appropriated from its derogatory usage and embraced by activists within the community. Queer art broadly refers to art created by and drawing on the experiences of those who identify as LGBTIQA+. Often used as an umbrella term, Queer is also used to retro-actively assign queer identity to artists whose sexual orientation or gender identity may have been ambiguous due to social attitudes and fear of prosecution or discrimination.
We hope you have a great and artful month of discovery, exploration and celebration.
