Not all children are comfortable in the world of make-believe, some children just don't get excited about reading fiction.  However, most children are naturally curious about the world and factual books can satisfy that curiosity.  They give a child instant gratification – they learn something there and then, they can become an expert yet they don’t have to read an entire book to feel accomplished. 

How a child feels about themselves as a reader is a huge indicator of whether they will fail or succeed; the more positive experiences a child has with books and reading the greater the chance of success.  Children need to feel they are being supported in their book choices and that what they choose to read is considered 'proper' reading.  Factual books are just as worthy as fiction!
