This was gripping from start to finish. I'm a sucker for stories set in schools and when it is a psychological thriller set in a school with a touch of dystopia, fire, gothic buildings and classical mythology thrown in, my joy is complete. Feeling out of your depth, feeling socially awkward and professionally insecure are emotions which tap into some of our deepest fears and this is where Madam hits the mark and captures the paranoia and confusion of the main character. How much it is an imaginary dystopia is a moot point, though perhaps being very close to an unpalatable truth is in itself a feature of a successful dystopian novel. It is, however a very thought-provoking and haunting narrative. An excellent twisted firestarter debut!
