Douglas Stuart's Reading List
'During the writing of Young Mungo, I kept thinking of these novels as though they were old friends. In their own way they have each taught me something invaluable about human nature: about love and violence, pride and shame, sorrow and resilience. I am fascinated by the working-class heroes at the heart of many of them, the quietly complicated love stories, the meditations on masculinity, or the fractured relationships between parent and child.
A recurring theme in my writing is the small ways in which we care for those we love, or how we can be abandoned by those who should care for us. These books have taught me about belonging and loneliness: how it can feel to be an outsider even when you are on the very inside of a tight-knit community.' Douglas Stuart, 2022
