We're going to be highlighting some of the recommended books by those of us who work in the shop. This time it’s Bee’s turn!
Hi, I’m Bee - shop manager at the Eagle Bookshop. I’m a Bioarchaeologist with an MSc in forensic science (I see dead people), I have a very wonderful cat called Felix, and I love books - no surprises there - but particularly science fiction/fantasy.
Terry Pratchett£14.99 £13.94
Oh Polly Perks. This is a fairly standalone discworld title, as much as any of them are! I have loved it for years, and return to it frequently, like a snuggly jumper.
Jasper Fforde£9.99 £9.29
The first in Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series, set in a parallel universe/alternate history. It's chock full of literary references, and is a wildly funny sort of fantasy. Looking for a book series with black market cheese? This is a goodun.
J. R. R. Tolkien£22.00 £20.46
I'd argue it doesn't need much introduction. This is not the copy I own, because my set came from the Eagle Bookshop, but it is a beautiful omnibus edition of a book I love very much.
Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett£14.99 £13.94
There was no way I was only including one Pratchett on my list, but I can at least make him share with Neil Gaiman... I almost lost my copy of Good Omens, but thankfully got it back from a 'borrower' (good rule of thumb, folks, don't lend books you wouldn't want to lose). I really love Good Omens, and felt the adaptation wasn't too shabby either tbh. Plus it has a bookshop!
Tamora Pierce£7.99 £7.43
Tamora Pierce is a YA author I measured the others against. These were her first 2 books, but I have a lot of nostalgia for all of her Tortall works.
William Goldman£9.99 £9.29
The film is a must-watch a couple of times a year in my family. I can recite good chunks of it. It's a cult classic. And this book adaptation ties into it so well that it's difficult to tell which came first! It's inconceivable!
Frank Herbert£9.99 £9.29
Ah, Dune. Certainly a book with far reaching sci-fi influence, I didn't enjoy it much the first time round, but it grew on me. I know it's not exactly a ringing endorsement, but the Dune books are classics for a reason!
Daniel Handke and Vanessa Hunt£33.99 £31.61
Without wanting to sound *too* much like a Monty Python sketch, one of my other loves is Disney Parks history, and this is a beautiful collection of the artworks found in the parks.
