I've read The Shipping Forecast for over 20 years on BBC Radio 4. Whilst it is in essence vital meteorological data, its poetic-sounding delivery has earned it cult status, inspiring artists, musicians and writers. I wrote the forward to the recent Shipping Forecast Puzzle Book (below) and here are some of the other books I have enjoyed that celebrate this beguiling British institution.
Alan Connor£14.99 £13.94
The ideal gift for radio lovers, sea dogs and puzzle fiends!
My colleague Peter Jefferson compiled this wonderful history of The Shipping Forecast after hanging up his Radio 4 headphones. His warm and authoritative voice is much missed from the airwaves but thankfully still only a phonecall away.
Charlie Connelly£9.99 £9.29
Charlie Connely's enviable voyage around the 31 areas of the forecast is a must-read.
Nic Compton£12.99 £12.08
Know your Humber from your Hebrides in Nic Compton’s maritime miscellany.
Peter Collyer£22.99 £21.38
See the enigmatic-sounding locations as captured in watercolour by Peter Collyer.
