I am a new children's author, writing my series Timmy and his magic leg. As a double below knee amputee and a Type 1 diabetic, I searched high and low to find children's books that include disabilities and health conditions and I found it very limited on choice, so I decided to change that. My series Timmy and his magic leg is an adventure series about 4 friends who delve into magical worlds, searching for items to complete a lost belonging to an evil wizard, This wizard is holding a doctor and his assistant prisoner and will not release them until Timmy and his friends complete the list.
Each character finds out that their disability or health condition can be used as a super-ability. Will the children complete the list? Will they save the doctor and his assistant? Will they get home in time for dinner? Find out in this exciting children's book series for children aged 4-8 years.
My book series will be a children’s fiction book series, the disabilities and what it is like to live with these every day, and the difficulties that others don’t see will be based on facts and personal experiences. Technology advances and research mean that there are an ever-increasing number of children having to deal with one or more of the disabilities identified within the book and children are being diagnosed younger with life-altering conditions, such as diabetes. Also, children with physical disabilities are attending more mainstream schools than in previous generations so children and parents are being exposed to a realm of disabilities previous generations have hidden away. Visual impairments in children are also well known and acknowledged with lots of children wearing glasses from a younger age within schools, but can also make children feel quite isolated if they are one of the few in the class who cannot see as well as others.
