Bill Samuel was, until recently, a director of his family’s business Foyles, and has written a memoir, An Accidental Bookseller, about his lifelong relationship with the business and with William and Christina Foyle, the two charismatic people who ran it for nearly 100 years. The memoir has sold in half a dozen countries and is being translated into Russian. Before inheriting the management of Foyles he was a chartered accountant leading a fairly nomadic life, living and working in Denmark, Kenya, Bahrain the Caribbean and Surrey. His second memoir, as yet un-named, on his 15-year involvement with the Turks and Caicos Islands, will be published in 2021. He is a director of the UK Booksellers’ Association and chairs its subsidiary Batch.
