Bookends is a family-run, independent bookshop set in a beautiful, rambling 5-storey Georgian building shared with second-hand bookshop Bookcase and vintage cafe and garden Cakes & Ale in the historic Border city of Carlisle. Established in 1978, we sell a huge range of new books, cards and gifts for adults and children and of course we do specialise in Cumbrian books. Sister shop Bookcase has an amazing treasure trove of second-hand and antiquarian books, sheet music, vinyl and Classical CDs. You can take time out of the book exploration to have tea and cake at our Cakes & Ale cafe.
We love being part of Carlisle's thriving cultural community and hold regular events, reading groups, poetry groups, Tipsy Filly gin 'n 'book nights, storytimes, quizzes and competitions! We are one of the organising partners of the Borderlines Book Festival which is held every October.
If you live locally, or if you're just visiting Carlisle, you're sure to find something to interest you in our sprawling empire!
Here on uk.bookshop.org you'll find a wealth of books on all subjects, and your purchase will help support us and other indie bookshops around the country. If you do want to see a greater range of specifically Cumbrian books ( about 2000 titles!) do have a good look on our own website at https://bookscumbria.com
