Letterbox Library
Since 1983, Letterbox Library has been a leading children's bookseller and education supplier, bringing teachers, librarians and parents the best in inclusive children's books. By “inclusive”, we mean books in which all children can see themselves as well as books in which they can witness our world community in all of its diversity. This includes books which star people of colour, disabled people, lgbtq+ people and people from all types of families and backgrounds in leading roles and in fantastic stories. We are also known for our books promoting social justice and books supporting children’s emotional health and mental wellbeing.
We are famous for our book selection process: we use an expert team of volunteers made up of teachers, parents/carers, librarians, teacher trainers & children, to review and choose all of our books. Our team only ‘approves’ about 35% of the books we are sent by publishers to consider for sale. They review all of the books not just for inclusive content but also for excellence in storyline/artwork. This selection process means we are always bringing you not just inclusive books, but the very best (and most recent) inclusive books.
We are passionate about resisting commercial trends; we want to offer children real choices in what they read. And, we are passionate about showcasing the voices (especially UK voices) of authors and illustrators who have traditionally been under-represented within the publishing industry.
Letterbox Library provides specially curated bookpacks for schools www.letterboxlibrary.com.
We are a workers’ cooperative and we are a not-for-profit social enterprise. This means that we are motivated to do what we do because of our social objectives. We also administer The Little Rebels Children's Book Award with Housmans Bookshop on behalf of the Alliance of Radical Booksellers. The Little Rebels Children’s Book Award is a prize for radical fiction aimed at children aged 0-12. We have been given a Toymark award by campaigners Let Toys Be Toys.
