Newham Bookshop
Newham Bookshop was founded in 1978 to bring the joy of reading and owning books to a poor area of east London, and has become an essential cultural hub serving the diverse communities of Newham and far beyond. Our loyal customers are delighted to browse in our well-stocked adults' bookshop and in our specialist children's bookshop.
We have excellent selections in all subject areas, including fiction, history, politics and feminism. We have the best cookery books, books on nature and the environment, and a large section of diverse voices celebrating the fiction, history and politics of the communities that we serve. We also have a large selection of titles about London and east London in particular.
We run and support author events and conferences, and work with schools, colleges, libraries and other community organisations to bring them authors and their books. We support and encourage local authors.
In 2018, Vivian Archer was recognised in the inaugural Books Are My Bag Readers' Awards for her Outstanding Contribution to Bookselling, and in 2019 we were the London Region winner of the Independent Bookshop of the Year. We received many wonderful endorsements, such as “Newham Bookshop is that very rare thing. It provides an oasis of book reading joy to a very diverse area that is all too often overlooked culturally and intellectually… We have never been there without spending many hours and many pennies on its selection of books.”
