Death in a Promised Land, his trailblazing account of the Tulsa race massacre is now in its tenth printing. The Secret Game, a story of race and basketball during World War II, won the 2016 PEN/ESPN Book Award for Literary Sports Writing. His most recent book, The World Beneath Their Feet, about the deadly race to summit the great peaks of the Himalayas, won the National Outdoor Book Award for History/Biography and was shortlisted for the 2020 William Hill Sports Book of the Year. It has also been translated into Italian and Polish, with Czech and Slovak editions coming out next year.
