Hi, I'm Sofia Akel and I'm a race equality specialist and researcher. 

I'm passionate about decolonising my reading and platforming authors of colour from the UK and beyond. I often read non-fiction, including books about race, politics and history, but I also enjoy beautiful books about love and empowerment. 

Reading literature from a diverse range of authors gives us the chance to learn about different lived experiences, cultures and voices of those who have historically been marginalised and omitted from popular literature and our education system. In the UK, many of us will go through education only reading one or two works by authors of colour, in turn this gives us a limited view and knowledge of our collective history, culture and even politics. From fiction to non-fiction, there is a whole world of incredible books to discover. By platforming authors of colour, we take charge of our own education, we respect and we value the voices of those who make up multi-cultural Britain and the world around us.
